Promoting Women-Men in Science!

Success Stories

Below are a sample of success stories from past attendees of our Women or Men in Science Conferences. If you have a story you would like to add, please contact info@wyomingwis.org. Thank You!

"Several years ago a young lady at RHS attended the Women in Science program at CWC. While at the conference, she was a winner of a scholarship to CWC for the next fall. Prior to that event, her performance, academically speaking, had been pretty dismal. I was on her case on a regular basis to get her grades up so that she was eligible to participate in the activity that I sponsor. Once she won that scholarship, it was like a light switch had been turned on. She started doing her work, coming to school early, studying, etc. Her D's and F's went to A's and B's. She attended CWC for a year and went on to LCCC, is in their philibotomy program, and is waiting to be accepted into LCCC's radiology program. I credit the Women in Science program for getting her on the success track."

'I teach sixth grade students, but many of the girls do participate as seventh and eighth graders. The main thing that they all tell me when they return is that "there are many opportunities for women to work towards in science fields." '

"Some positive outcomes for our female student body in the sciences . . . . we presently have several girls in dental school, vet. school, microbiology positions with Heinz, nursing school, radiology careers, forensics, etc., than we have ever had. They are "awakening" to their own potential! Of course, many things are contributing to that, but we think the Women in Science Conference has had some influence in helping them become aware of the opportunities and careers they can pursue."

"Over the past few years I have taken a group of girls ranging from 7th grade through 12th grade to both the Riverton and Laramie WIS conferences. All of my girls comment on how great the conferences are and beg to go back year after year. Many are already interested in careers in Science, but several don't have a great interest until they attend the hands-on workshops and listen to the guest speakers. I have had several kids decide to go into fields of science because of what they learned at these workshops. Also, it has generated great discussions and research projects within my own classroom - a starting point for science fair and science olympiad interest, as well."

"My son thoroughly enjoyed the [2008] Men in Science conference, in fact, it got him so interested in Homeland Security that he followed up on it by taking the Introduction to Homeland Security class @ CWC this year!"

"One of last years’ graduates participated in this event, I think, a few years back. She is now enrolled at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, working towards a degree related to environmental science- Mark could clarify. I'd probably call this a success story."
